The BJP city unit is popularising various social security schemes launched by the Centre to mark the completion of one year of the NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The party leaders and workers on Sunday distributed forms to enrol people for the insurance and pension schemes launched by Mr. Modi early this month. Former Minister Suresh Kumar launched the programme at Sunnadakeri as part of the Jana Kalyana Parva being observed by the BJP to mark one year in office. He highlighted the benefits of the insurance schemes wherein a family could get an insurance cover at a premium of Rs. 12 per year and in the event of death of the policy holder, the family would get Rs. 2 lakh.
The party workers will rope in people from the economically weaker section and the lower middle class for the Atal Pension Yojana to ensure social security post-retirement.
Mr. Suresh Kumar pointed out that more than 90 per cent of the population lacked social security benefits post retirement and Mr. Modi had launched the programme to bring them under social security net.
Though the State and Central government employees get pension and the rich save or invest for their retirement, no such option was available for the majority of the population who belong to the poor and the lower middle class category. The Atal Pension Yojana was tailor-made for them, he said. Earlier, Mr. Suresh Kumar held a press conference in the city and claimed that the country was witnessing positive changes in governance and administration.
The Opposition drew flak for criticising the Prime Minister on his foreign trips and listed out India’s intervention in quake-hit Nepal, release of Indian fishermen by Sri Lanka, and the release of a parish priest from Afghanistan, as testimony of India’s growing diplomatic influence under Mr. Modi.
